      FAQ

Just fill out the online form above. If you can attach your CV, DBS check (if you have one), a reference and any other relevant supporting documents, that will speed up the process and will help, but if you need time to gather those then simply submit the form on its own.

Not necessarily. Teaching qualifications are indeed useful and preferred, and a degree in the subject being taught is desired as a minimum qualification. However, it has been found that a qualification doesn’t guarantee competence and in reverse, not having a teaching qualification does not rule out competence. Therefore other qualifications, experience and abilities are taken into consideration.

There are training opportunities which are recommended and advised for all tutors regardless of qualifications. These are optional for qualified teachers but for those not holding a teaching qualification, these are required.  These courses are either paid for by the tutor or an arrangement through commissions can be made to offset the cost of the training.

      1. The above form is to be submitted.
      2. With the form, or as soon as possible after, your CV, DBS check if you have one, a reference and any other relevant supporting documents are to be supplied.
      3. These are then reviewed.
      4. You will be sent the contracts to read and given the chance to get clarified any points you are uncertain on.
      5. You will then be contacted to be offered an interview, or informed that your application was not successful.
      6. The interview may be face-to-face or online and will also include a short trial lesson.
      7. You will then be contacted as to whether your application was successful or not.
      8. If successful, you need to have read, signed and submitted the contracts.
      9. You will then be supplied students per the agreement.

      There are four contracts:

      1. The contract between the tutor and Plymouth Private Tutors.
      2. The contract between the tutor and the student/parent.
      3. The contracts for the use of space (where applicable):
        1. The Use of The Tutor Room
        2. Tutoring from Your Home Agreement

You set the hours that you would like. They can be as little as one lesson a week or up to however many hours you feel you can competently handle. Some tutors tutor as a part-time activity whereas other tutors tutor as their full-time career. Whatever your goal, Plymouth Private Tutors will endeavour to help you achieve it.

Again, as in the above question, this is set by you, but be sure to inform Plymouth Private Tutors of your plans so that suitable students can be assigned to you. It would be expected that if you took on students for exams that you would see them through to their exams.

You would be a self-employed tutor and expected to uphold the pertaining responsibilities such as being responsible for declaring your income and paying your taxes. This would also include being responsible for your own professional liability and your own insurance.

The usual rate for a 1to1 tutoring lesson is £25. This can be increased depending on qualifications and experience, and it can also be a lower rate if still undergoing training or required/preferred for any other reason.

The usual arrangement is that Plymouth Private Tutors holds a 20% commission on all tutoring fees and 30% if the tutoring spaces are used. There are some variations depending on training rates, running groups and training programmes.

Monthly lesson payments are received by Plymouth Private Tutors in advance of the lessons. Tutors are paid through Plymouth Private Tutors once the lessons have been delivered and upon invoice from the tutor. Payments are monthly. If the lesson has not been delivered due to the student, the tutor still receives payment. If the lesson was not delivered due to the tutor, payment is held until the lesson has been delivered. See the contract for more details.

      • Tutoring can take place at the student’s home if the tutor is able to, and happy to travel to the student’s home.
      • Tutoring can take place at 69 Hermitage Road, or possibly in the future at a Tutoring Centre which is currently being worked on.
      • Tutoring may also take place at the tutor’s home in some cases. An inspection from a Plymouth Private Tutor representative would need to have taken place and the Tutoring from Your Home Agreement would need to have been signed.
