GCSE Tuition: One-to-one

GCSE, One-to-one Lessons

Our Testimonials

Lessons

  • We provide one-to-one lessons, and we also offer small group lessons.
  • Shared lessons can sometimes be arranged.
  • A small group can make tuition cost-effective, and a small group of like-minded students can add to the enjoyment and boost motivation.
  • We offer face-to-face and online, for one-to-one and for group lessons.
  • In most cases, face-to-face lessons are preferred and recommended. In the event of any restrictions on face-to-face lessons, we follow government guidelines and use online platforms such as Zoom.

One-to-one

    • Some tutors can visit the student’s home; however, tutoring usually takes place at the tutor’s own home.
    • For Vivienne Lowe and Clare Taylor, tutoring takes place at their homes in the Hyde Park area of Plymouth. Each are family homes which have spacious designated tutoring rooms. In some cases, these rooms can also be used for lessons with other Plymouth Private Tutors.
    • Parents are welcome to be present for the lessons or to return at the end. Often a student works better without their parents there, but a parent/family member being present at the initial lesson can sometimes be reassuring.

Groups

  • All group lessons take place at the above addresses.
  • Yes.

One-to-one

There are 2 schedules: (Sep-Sep) 2021-2022 current (Sep-Sep) 2022-2023 upcoming

Our Response…

Since 2020…

“Since 2020, Plymouth Private Tutors has experienced a dramatic increase in parents contacting us with concerns about their child’s educational progress, confidence and well-being. Our response has been to expand our activities by taking on more tutors, and by setting up groups to be able to help meet these many important needs.

Our GCSE Groups are a new service devised to make learning fun and effective.”

GCSE Maths Fundamentals

  • This group is suitable for anyone struggling to work toward their maths GCSE: it is for the student who is not keeping up well in class at school, who is finding a lot of their schoolwork, if not all of it, confusing and who “can’t wait” to no longer “have to do maths”. It is for those students who haven’t proficiently mastered the basics such as times tables, mental calculations (with speed and accuracy) and are therefore slow and overwhelmed with maths at their current level. But despite this, they are willing to accept help and the parent wants to support them but may be struggling to do so on their own.
  • This group is suitable for year 10 and 11 working towards the Foundation Paper, and for year 9 students. It is suitable for students in these year groups who fit the above description. Effort will be made to embrace and respect the differences in age and school year rather than to make any focus or issue out of them.
  • The purpose of this group is to restore those key steps that have been forgotten, omitted, insufficiently learned or practised, or perhaps insufficiently taught. The purpose is to handle the foundations which are currently rocky, to say the least, and therefore to make possible the learning of mathematical concepts of a more complex nature, and to hopefully raise the enthusiasm for maths along the way.
  • At the beginning of each session, a relevant and carefully selected area of maths will be taught: it will be communicated with plenty of visual, and physical where possible, aids and with simple and concise language. Time will be taken to resolve fundamental confusions and to clarify key terminology to ensure a sound understanding has been established. This will then be reinforced with games, short tasks, repetition and practice questions.
  • A lot of these areas will take more than one session.
  • Homework set to reinforce is recommended but optional.

GCSE Maths Exam Preparation

  • This group is suitable for those students who are conscientious learners. They are doing ok but still need some support. They want to do well and/or need to achieve a particular grade. They want to give it the best they can. Their parents too, want to give them the best chance.
  • This group is suitable for year 10 and year 11 working towards the Higher Paper who also fit the above description. Effort will be made to embrace and respect the differences of age and school year rather than to make any focus or issue out of them.
  • The purpose of this group is to consolidate understanding of maths CGSE topics and to achieve greater familiarity, experience, and skill with GCSE exam-style questions.
  • The purpose is to also understand and become competent with exam techniques and time limits.
  • Each session will take up a GCSE topic to go over and will work through practice questions on that topic. Nearer to the exams, sessions will work through practice papers, providing help and extra practice where needed.

GCSE English Writing

  • This group is suitable for those students who are struggling with writing. They struggle in understanding what is required of them and how to organize their ideas, to then get their idea on paper. The various writing styles and terminology may be confusing, and the enthusiasm has certainly dropped.
  • This group is suitable for years 9, 10 and 11 who fit the above description. Effort will be made to embrace and respect the differences of age and school year rather than to make any focus or issue out of them.
  • The purpose of this group is to clear-up the terminology so that the different styles of writing and their purposes are clear. Following that, the purpose is to teach clearly and concisely the features and techniques of each writing style with plenty of examples and practice opportunities, working up to GCSE exam-style questions.
  • The purpose also extends to establishing greater ability in essay writing, planning and time limits.
  • After on overview of the required writing styles they will be worked through in detail: a style will be focused on in the session and worked through, from understanding the style, features of the style, recognizing the style, and techniques to be able to write in that style. One style will usually take more than one session.
  • Discussion, feedback and therefore group responsibility are key to this group. For those that are not so confident, the groups are small and great effort is made to ensure a safe and secure environment so that that confidence can grow/be restored.
  • Homework set to practice and reinforce is required.
